The first weekend of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival closed on Sunday (April 26) with performances from Burna Boy, Dave Matthews Band, HAIM and The Branford Marsalis Quartet headlining at the Fair Grounds in Gentilly.
Saturday was filled iconic, high-profile New Orleans musicians such as Irma Thomas, Big Freedia and Tank and the Bangas. The day concluded with the likes of Lil’ Wayne playing with The Roots as his backing band and Harry Connick, Jr.
A day earlier, headliners such as Kacey Musgraves, Gladys Knight and Cheap Trick rocked the various stages at the Fair Grounds.
Local artist and Mardi Gras Indian FlagBoy Giz has performed at Jazz Fest in years past on smaller stages but performed on a larger stage, the Congo Square stage, this year. He said it was a “beautiful thing” to be able to perform on the Congo Square stage on the festivals opening day on Thursday (April 24).
“[I’m] just glad that this festival keeps giving opportunities for young up and coming musicians and even older up and coming musicians,” Giz told Verite News in an interview. “People who get a chance to show off their art form.
“This festival is beautiful and I’m glad that they included me.”

The festival is also a hotspot for local artists selling clothing, paintings and other wares, while the cuisine also attracts tourists and natives alike.
Local artist and Gentilly native Antoine Smith, who last sold art at the festival in 1996, returned as a vendor for the first time in over 20 years. He said he appreciates the people and ambience found at the festival.
“Knowing the history of Jazz Fest, I just wanted to be a part of it,” Smith said. “This event always tends to bring a lot of people from all over and I just want a lot of people to see my work and what I do.”
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival continues on Thursday (May 1) in a second weekend that will feature Pearl Jam, Tems, Santana and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.
