Katie Jane Fernelius reports on the local government for Verite.

Prior to joining Verite, she was an independent journalist and producer. Over the course of her career, she’s reported for and worked with The Guardian, BBC World Service, The Appeal, Quartz, The Nation, The Assembly, In These Times, INDY Week, and other outlets.

Her most recent podcast project was A Field Guide to Gay Animals, which was an official selection of the 2024 Tribeca Festival.

She attended Duke University, where she studied at the Center for Documentary Studies. After college, she moved to Lagos, Nigeria, on a Fulbright scholarship. She’s worked at the DeWitt Wallace Center at Duke University and the Delgado Community College Writing Center.
